Another Way Splatter Vinyl
Thanks to bands like Blink 182, Newfound Glory, and Fall Out Boy, pop-punk gets a bad rap. People forget or don’t know that for years since the dawn of The Ramones, snotty, pimple-faced, leather jacket-clad legions of kids have rocked basements with their 1-2-3 attitude.
After their album Warning Device made a bunch of best of 2008 lists I decide to check these Wyoming natives. Teenage Bottlerocket play pop-punk in the vein of Screeching Weasel, Mr. T Experience, and The Queers, which isn’t to call them unoriginal but just to give you an idea of where they’re coming from.
Letting their music speak for itself, each proper release by this band includes similar album art, which includes, the band’s logo (a skull with two rockets crossed behind it) and the name of the album. Sometimes less is more; and even if it isn’t, the beautiful clear with red splatter vinyl inside Another Way’s jacket makes up for it.
Songs range from getting stood up (Be Stag), to kicking people in the face (Patrick), to chicks (Mini Skirt, Rebound), to finding your place in the world (Opportunity, Another Way). Teenage Bottlerocket have enough toe-tapping, fist-pumping, sing-along anthems in one album to fill most pop-punk acts entire careers.
The band recently signed to Fat Wreck Chords and has a new release in the works, but in the meantime any of their other albums including Warning Device and Total, will keep you occupied. Also look out for two great split 7”s the band did with Broadway Calls and The Ergs where they cover the Dead Milkmen (Dean’s Dream) and Green Day (Having a Blast) respectfully.
