Paint It Black - Goliath 7"
Sometimes in record collecting you have to bite the bullet and spend more than you’d like. Other times you don’t even have the option. But if it presents itself you have to strike while the iron is hot. He who hesitates, masturbates. Or something like that.
Back in January of 2008, I took a trip to Philly to see Paint It Black play a record release show for their album “New Lexicon”. They played two nights at the First Unitarian Church, a Saturday and a Sunday. Knowing the drive from Jersey would be time consuming I opted for the Saturday show as my job has me up at 4:30am on Mondays. Had I known when I bought the tickets that each night would hold a unique freebie for attendees I would have went Sunday and sucked it up the next morning.
Saturday’s show gave everyone a free copy of the new CD. Totally awesome considering it cost more than the price of admission. It was like being paid to go to the show. And Paint It Black, as always, did not disappoint that night. They were then and are still currently my favorite Hardcore band around now. Describing their music as brutal, relentless, and lyrically furious would be putting it lightly.
Sunday show attendees received something a little sweeter though, a limited edition 7” with a song not on the new album. 500 hand-numbered copies on one-sided clear vinyl with the lyrics etched on the other side. Since that show I’ve played the role of Indiana Jones in search of the Holy Grail. A year and a half on and I finally won a copy off eBay. Normally I hate doing this. It drives me crazy that people profit off of music in this manner. But like I said, sometimes you have to bite the bullet. So I bit down hard and won with a bid that I’m ashamed to admit here in print. Was it worth it? You’re goddamned right it was.
