King Khan & The Shrines - The Supreme Genius Of

If you read my account of Khan’s show in Brooklyn recently you know that I love this band. A better way of putting it might be to say that I am a convert, 100 percent. And it is with the zeal of the newly baptized that I feel duty bound to be really honest about this album, which I bought the very morning after the show. It just isn’t good enough.

Let me explain. This album is good. In fact it is pretty fucking great, just not good enough. Did you ever know a girl who photographed well but in person, for whatever reason, was the hottest being on the planet? This is the same sort of dilemma we face here with this album of theirs (and maybe any, I don’t know yet) and a live Khan show. The recording just can’t capture what I saw (blurrily) go down with my own eyes.

It is all here though, Soul Garage R&B craziness. Welfare Bread is a genuinely beautiful song, Burning Inside makes you want to break your windows, Took My Girl to Dinner is hilarious and I Wanna Be A Girl is fuckin’ inexplicable, all the stuff that makes them who they be are accounted for. What is missing however is the absolute jump-around-now vibe of their live show. I actually threw my beer down and waded into the crowd. It was basically full and cost me 7 dollars.

Maybe I just got a false impression of the show, maybe I somehow thought they were more awesome than they actually were and the recording is absolutely representative of the band? Maybe I was just in a very good mood that day? Nope, I was in a bad fucking mood because I spent two and half hours to get out there and then had to jump back on the train after the concert was over. The show was, and they are, the absolute real deal.  Now what is needed is whatever small miracle necessary to capture on wax the crazy voodoo shit they bring to the stage.
