Three Records #2
This actually came out a little while back but I just got it now and there’s a new one coming out in a couple weeks so I felt it worth mentioning.
Let me just say flat out, that Three Records is my favorite zine of all time, period. It’s built around such a simple concept and yet it is full of so much of what makes music so important to a lot of people it’s unbelievable. I’m not going to bore anybody with a history lesson, but before this whole internet thing, zines were the only way besides word of mouth to keep information, opinion, and discussion going in the punk rock scene. And every scene had more than a couple of these de facto newspapers that were near and dear to many people. But now I’ve run on a little so let me get back to my point. Buy Three Records now because it’s fucking fantastic.
Each issue features a whole bunch of people that each talk a little bit about their three favorite records (a couple few just provide a list). But it’s more than just “here are my three favorite records”. It’s stories about people. About where they were when they first heard or bought an album. About the good and bad times that music got them through. About how important music was to their upbringing. It’s about the music that they grew up on and became who they are through.
The thing about punk rock is that for many of us that grew up with it, there wasn’t too much else out there for us. And when we came to it and realized that “holy shit, there’s more people like me out there” it was a defining moment in our lives. A moment where we realized that there are more people out there in this world that think and feel like us. Communities/scenes were built around this. Friendships and marriages came from it. Children were born out of it. There are albums that mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people but there’s also parts these albums that mean a lot of the same things to a lot of different people. And when you talk about what these albums mean to you, you realize all over again that you’re not alone. Reading Three Records is a great reminder of all of these things.
Pieces of paper held together by staples that evoke emotions. It as beautiful a thing as the pieces of vinyl and plastic that they tell the tales of.
The other really nice thing about this zine are the photos of all the people that go along with their 3 records. You look at these people and read their words and connect with each and every one of them.
Chrissy Piper, FSS thanks you and we can’t wait for Issue #3.
