Andrew Jackson Jihad / Mischief Brew – Split 8”

(8"s of Polka Dotted Oddity)

(8"s of Polka Dotted Oddity)

I don’t even know where to begin with this one. Pirates Press Records is pretty well known for putting out some amazingly unique variations of colored vinyl. But this thing is just straight insane. I can honestly say this is the most unique piece of wax I own. For one thing it’s eight inches. Not seven. Not ten. But fucking eight. For another thing it’s clear with polka dots. And the coup de grace is that it has concentric grooves. So basically each side has two songs intertwined. Move the needle a step forward or backward at any point and you’re on a different track. Why did they do this? Because record collectors eat this shit up. The more bizarre the better. Who wants to have a collection made up entirely of 12” black vinyl with songs running one after the next? Fucking communists, that’s who. But here in America we like our variety. We like the fact that it takes a half hour to go through a hundred types of cereal in the supermarket before finding the perfect one. And we like our records the same way. Millions of colors, shapes, and sizes. It makes things interesting and it keeps us coming back for more. Some of my favorite records are the oddities: my plaid Mighty Mighty Bosstones LP, my live 5” Dropkick Murphy’s record, my double white Rancid 10”. You can’t do this shit with other formats! And this is another reason records are always superior to CD. The music on this one ain’t half bad neither. Both bands offer up a song each with both acoustic and electric versions hidden in the grooves. It’s a little tricky finding the exact spot on each side to listen to the alternate version but it’s pretty cool nonetheless.

Get ‘em while they last as they only made 170 with polka dots. And if you don’t like it I hear Russia’s nice this time of year.
