(Crossed Wires on Crystal Clear Vinyl)
Sometimes I forget how amazing vinyl sounds compared to MP3. I’m not a snob. I’ll listen to it however I can get it. But if I have the choice then I’m choosing to fire up my record player. I had ordered this from Merge a little while back and there was a delay in the manufacturing of them so they emailed me the MP3s to tide me over until the 7” came out. It’s definitely a cool thing that a label would do this. And it’s even cooler that the digital age allows them to. So for the past couple weeks I’ve been enjoying “Crossed Wires B/w Blinders” on my iPod on my way to and from work. Both are great little ditties that any fan of Superchunk will love. Like most of the band’s catalog these songs are catchy, poppy, and just fast enough to not be considered wimpy Indie Rock by any standard. I had no complaints at all. They even included a demo of the title track in the download that wasn’t going to be on the vinyl. At this point it almost didn’t even matter if the record ever showed up at my doorstep. At least that’s what I thought until it did and until I listened to it on my home stereo in all its uncompressed glory. Suddenly the guitars, the bass, the drums, and the vocals sounded like they had some fucking power behind them. The overall sound was fuller and more akin to a live performance. Like I said, sometimes I forget how much better vinyl actually sounds. But this was like night and day. The vinyl put the MP3s to shame. I wasn’t even sure I was listening to the same songs. It was like the band had turned their amps all the way up just for me. If you’re looking for something to tide you over till their next full length, here you have it. And remember, enjoy those MP3s on when you’re on the go, but for the love of God rock the vinyl when you get home.
