Punks and Metalheads don’t often meet on common ground. While both have an affinity to leather, studs, and generally smelling unpleasant, the two are still somewhat opposite camps. Sure you’ll see Misfits and Motorhead shirts at both of their get-togethers but it should be stated that these are but a few of the exceptions. However, in cases where the planets align and the two converge head on and form like Voltron the result is usually some form of Thrash Metal. Bands like DRI, Anthrax, Slayer, Suicidal Tendencies are some examples. Another example and the point of this article is Richmond Virginia’s own Municipal Waste. And it’s a good time for Richmond these days with bands like Cloak/Dagger and Government Warning also making their city proud.
“Massive Aggressive” is the Municipal Waste’s fourth studio album and not unlike their others it’s a straight up Thrash masterpiece. Song topics range from being killed by radioactive wolves (Wolves of Chernobyl), to being killed by a blood thirsty femme fatale (Horny For Blood), to being killed in a vat of acid (Acid Sentence), to being killed on a Reality-TV game show (Wrong Answer), to being killed by a disembodied severed head (Severed Head), to being killed by a Frankenstein-like half man half machine (Mech-Cannibal). Oh yeah they fucking hate churches, religion, and the media too. The message? I have no idea. But it’s awesome and lives up to the title of “Massive Aggressive”. And that’s something the Punks and the Metalheads will no doubt agree upon.
