Butthole Surfers – Live PCPEP

Butthole Surfers – Live PCPEP

There’s a time to fuck and a time to crave but the shah sleeps in Lee Harvey’s grave!

PCP because these guys did a lot of drugs. EP because it’s only seven songs long. I have to admit prior to listening to this album I didn’t know much about the Butthole Surfers except that they had two hits that I recognize as theirs (Who Was In My Room Last Night and Pepper). I never liked nor disliked them. I’m not even sure what made me buy this album. Probably the clown giving the middle finger on the back cover and the fact that it’s green vinyl. I gotta say though whatever it was that made me buy this I’m fucking glad I did.

“Live PCPEP” is insane. The perfect mixture of punk and noise rock without being pretentious or arty in the least. The Butthole Surfers, as far as I can tell, at the time of this recording had one sole mission. To fucking destroy their audiences. When Gibby Haynes yells, “I’m am number one motherfucker. Don’t even gaze upon me with your naked eye. SHUT UPPPPP”, I don’t think he’s joking. The crowd yells back at him to shut up but who’s got the mic. This band is intent on beating their audience over the head with rock and roll. They don’t want their audience leaving happy, they want them bloodied and bruised by the sheer force of their music.  There’s screaming, yelling through a bullhorn, odd tape effects, a saxophone, and more screaming. The guitars are loud and gnarly. The only thing holding these proceedings together are the bass and drums and even they freak out at times letting the floor drop out entirely. This is the portrait of a band giving every single ounce of their energy into their performance. When they finish the last song Haynes asks the audience if they want an encore and then calls them “shits” and “fucks” for leaving and tells them he hopes they “get to work on time”. I imagine the audience looking at them much in the way the kids at the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance looked at Marty McFly. They just weren’t ready for them yet.
