Cutting my toenails. So I straight don’t do it maing, let my shoes break them off where they see fit. Another thing I don’t like doing is thinking.

Awhile back a band called DBCR contacted Uncle Brother T about maybe sending him a 7 inch to review. T is neck deep in Baldy Longhair bizness (best tape company you ever heard of, suc kas) so I said I’d handle it. After a long wait I got the 7 inch. After an equally long wait I gave it a listen.

I assumed their first track on the disc “Let Them Eat Bikes” ( I guess an allusion to the Marie Antoinette quote) was gonna be an uptempo, we-ride-bikes-so-fuck-you deal. For the youth. Turns out to not be so.

It is uptempo. It’s kind of Crass meets Husker Du by way of early Sham. It’s a sociological rant against upper middle-class giving orders about recycling and bike lanes while real problems get ignored. Picture all those fuckers you see on x-pensive ass bikes rocking Che Guevara t-shirts from Starbucks back to their Brownstones. Yah fuck them. I had to think about it, but I agree with them.

So I flip the disc feeling like I gotta handle on theses cats. 4-4 time conscious punk. Let’s do it. Turns out no. Slow, slow sludged out. Second cut, “Reverse Broken Window Theory Part I” had me thinking (goddamnit) that I had the record player on the wrong speed. Then the lyrics, thoughtfully included with download code, had me thinking (goddamn it a fucking gain) what the reverse broken window theory might mean. Best I could come up with would be a state of shiny and empty promises. A country with really good wi-fi but no real hope. And again, I can get behind DBCR, fuck that too.

So in conclusion, DBCR are a good band, they can move from the quick to the slow stuff equally well and they are clever dudes. Well compared to me, for example. They will make you bob yo head. and think. fuck.

But also
Here lies the almighty FSS, gone but not to be forgotten.
Requiem In Pacem
Who hanged the stars and opens the bars?
Yus.

All kinds of stuff really. Friends. Youth. My pets. Falafels. New Jersey. They have a really fun and heartfelt self titled full length on bandcamp which you should definitely check out for free and more importantly they have this 7″ out now on Get Better Records which you should most definitely buy for not-free.

“Scratching Post” will immediately bring a smile to your face. I can’t listen to this and not be put in a good mood. Reminds me of early Weston and maybe even a little early J Church in that their songs perfectly encapsulate the murky waters of early adulthood while still having one foot firmly planted in joyful adolescence. Button Up are youthful without being immature. Fun without being a joke. And earnest without having to sport beards and flannel shirts.

You can listen to the whole thing right now here but c’mon dude…music on a computer??? That’s so 1999. Get the 7″. It’s one of these new mixed colored records I keep seeing pop up in my mailorder deliveries. I dig em. Earth friendlier and entirely unique. My copy is kinda a purply black swirly typa deal.

But there’s something about a dude in a bad Jersey accent calling me a little jerk and numb-nuts before kicking into the most righteous pizza fueled Ramones punk I’ve heard since forever. How do you argue with a band that spends the beginning of their new 7″ telling you to smoke, drink, fight, and eat pizza all while rattling a chain that’d make even the Gorch nervous? You can’t. It’s just too good. Hoboken NJ you’ve been warned. For too long we’ve had to deal with your lack of parking, lame ass reality baking shows, and wannabe yuppie shit heads. It’s time for all yous to burn your tongues on some pepperoni pizza.

Since I first blasted their Raw Pie cassette I’ve been hooked. This band literally encompasses everything that rock and roll should be. And they bring the fucking tunes to back their attitudes earning the right to rip off Carl from Aqua Teen and Joey’s ghost as much as they damn well please.

Oops Baby Records who not only has one of my favorite logos (look it up jerk) also now put out one of my favorite 7″s of the year. This ones worth it for the cover art alone. Order soon in hopes of getting the limited pepperoni red colored wax. Or don’t and possibly get brass knuckled up by the band. Your choice numb-nuts.

Coming out about a year after their “House With A Curse” full length, Parasites (also produced by J Robbins) picks up right where Coliseum left off. And that’s a good thing.

Before I even get into the music let me talk for a minute about how awesome this thing looks. Rick Froberg of Drive Like Jehu/Hot Snakes drew the cover art. The edition I got even came with a lithograph of it signed by Sir Froberg that some day when I’m not broke I might get framed. The vinyl itself (and there are a couple variants out there but the edition I got anyway) is half marble green half clear orange. It’s so fucking rad. And Temporary Residence as always put in a welcome download code so that I can take “Parasites” on my train into work like I’m doing right now. On to the tracks tho.

I was a little nervous that this EP was going be a bunch of throw-aways that didn’t make the cut for their last LP but not only are they absolutely not they also create a mini album of sorts with a life all its own. The tracks flow into one another like they were meant for this release and this release only which is not always an easy thing to do with a short player.

Lyrically and thematically “Parasites” is every bit as dense and dark as the bands other output. I mean before I even heard it I’m reading titles like The Ghost of God and knowing what I’m in for. The one song I wasn’t too into was Girl With The Fiery Eye. Musically it’s as good as anything else on here but something about that lyric seemed a tad corny to be. Fuck it though there’s well more than enough other killer songs on here to make up for the one mediocre one. I actually think I like track Big Baby the best which is an odd choice considering that as far as I can tell it’s just a angry tune directed at bassist Mike Pascal for being late to practice. It’s not exactly their most profound song lyrically but something about it just gets me going. Guess maybe I know a lot of big babies.

Christ. Not that this has anything to do with anything but I’m writing this review on my damn iPhone while taking the train into work and this app I’m using to type it out is pissing me off so hard that I have to cut this short. But yeah “Parasites”. Get it. Or get them I should say. Then get checked out at a clinic.

Besides being the best live band I saw all year, Night Birds have also now put out quite possibly the best punk album of the year as well. Up until now I don’t think any band has ever so eloquently referenced the Pulaski Skyway… But lemme start it like this… When I was growing up every weekend I’d watch Commander USA’s Groovie Movies on the USA network. If you don’t remember the program it was this dude in a shittily made superhero costume playing bad (good) horror movies. My dad particularly loved this oddball. Honestly I was a little too young to remember all the movies that vividly. A few bloody/creepy images remain in the crevices of my mind. For me this was the start of a lifelong love affair with horror movies. The only other thing I hold more dear is punk rock. So you can imagine that a band that combines both would be something I’d be uhhhh into.

“The Other Side of Darkness” is the punk album for the kids that not only love horror classics like The Howling but who also love the not-so-classics like The Howling 3: The Marsupials. Forget having seen all the Scream movies…have you seen all the Critters movies? Even the one in outer space??? Do you hold Class of 1984 and Sorority House Massacre 2 in the same regard some people hold shit like Titanic or fucking Forrest Gump? If yes you need this record. And I want to be clear about something, Night Birds are not cheesy at all (despite my cheesy horror movie references). This isn’t the fucking Danzig-less Misfits. These songs sound dead serious. People tend to forget the fact that a Carpenter flick like They Live (while it’s most known for a 10 minute cheese laden back-alley fight scene revolving around a pair of sunglasses) is a direct critique of advertising, big business, and politics in Amerikkka. Night Birds not only understand this but they even wrote a song about it (Hoffman Lens).

Shit even if you’ve never been to a horror convention you need this record. It’s like the second coming of the Adolescents meets the surf punk leanings of bands like Agent Orange. Put these guys right up there with OFF in terms of breathing real life back into old school hardcore. Some of the best songs on this album like Paranoid Times and Oblivious have little to do with horror movies and more to do with the horrors of everyday life like war and the possibility that when the world ends there’s really nothing more after it.

Grave Mistake and the band put out 210 copies of this with a really rad ass silk screened cover. And the vinyl sounds every bit as good as the packaging looks. This needs to be the next record you buy.

In the meantime I’ll conclude with my Joe Bob Briggsian album summary…The Other Side of Darkness: torture, disease, the end of the world, 1 eye, 2 demons, 1 murdered dog, and 2 boobs.

DCs The Shirks channel bands from Radio Birdman to The Saints to The MC5, injecting old school sounds with a more modern Punk spirit and urgency. I really love the hell outta this release. Even the cover art of a sleazy looking dude with a Paris Hilton dog is right on. My only complaint is that it doesn’t have more than three songs on it. I’m gonna surely keep my eyes out for more by this band. When they say “nobody’s gonna love you like me” on the title track I for one share the sentiment. Pick it up at Grave Mistake and while you wait for your copy (or if you don’t believe me) stream it here on the labels BandCamp page.

Before getting into this one I’d just like to say that in case you haven’t noticed, we’re back to our old format of long form reviews and rants. No more weekly updates. We thought doing the short punchy stuff where we hit you with 20 reviews at once all rapid fire would be more internet 2.0 of us. We thought the fans would be all over it. Turns out it’s not fun writing those and we don’t care what you think. We also weren’t very good at doing one a week… soooo….Long live being long winded!… or Viva Words! or something or other. On with the review…

What Louisville’s Young Widows have done with this new album is basically to slow the tempo, darken the tone, and really create a fucking heavy ass melancholy mood. It was even recorded at a joint called “The Funeral Home” (for added effect no doubt), or maybe it was a real funeral home which would actually make more sense after listening to it. At first I was hoping they’d bring some more post hardcore fury into this one, but it’s been raining here for the last 6 days or so and somehow this album now makes total sense. What I think I love most about it is that it is an album in the truest sense of the word. From start to finish you are listening to one cohesive piece of music and that’s an art that by and large has been left to the wayside in modern times. Is this a concept album in the same way Fucked Up’s “David Comes To Life” is? Not really. I mean I don’t see a unifying story connecting the tracks, but I definitely feel a unifying vibe. Future Heart may be able to stand on it’s own as a single but even just listening to that one song would be doing a disservice to the expansiveness of the LP.

The double 12″ vinyl from Temporary Residence Limited comes in a sturdy gate-fold cover adorned with skulls and bees and assorted creepiness. There was a download code inside but this album begs to be played on vinyl for the full effect. In fact if it’s still raining when I get in later I’m dimming the lights, throwing it on and hitting up my wife’s stockpile of wine.

With “In And Out of Youth and Lightness” Young Widows come at you like a post hardcore Bauhaus and really build on everything they’ve done previous. I think they get better which each album and that’s really saying alot.

Hardcore bands generally don’t write concept albums. They generally don’t write 5 minute songs. You generally know what to expect from these guys…. the streets… respect… family… 1.2.3.4. go! Fucked Up though? Man… these guys either love hardcore or fucking despise it with every fiber of their being. I can’t tell the difference. I mean they either love it so much as to give it the tlc and attention it so richly deserves or they hate it so much they’re setting out to destroy it’s foundations and create something new and better. More likely though, they don’t give it a second thought and just do what they do. Which in this case is writing an album about a British dude named David working in a light-bulb factory that falls in love with and then subsequently is forced to deal with the death of one of his co-workers named Veronica. I don’t want to bore you with more of the story than that. Not that it’s boring either… just that I’m a little fuzzy on the rest of it. The band can’t even properly explain what’s going on when asked though, so I don’t feel too bad.

This album isn’t out yet. So you’re getting (for once) an early review out of us. It comes out on June 7th. If like me you preordered it from Matador you already have it in its MP3 and/or Flac forms. I’d like to revisit this review when the vinyl arrives and maybe I will, but for now you get the digital review. There’s four singles off this album (Queen of Hearts, The Other Shoe, Ship of Fools, and A Little Death) that you can download on the Matablog for free right now and if you haven’t done so you should. Before I had access to the rest of the album I listened to these four songs incessantly. I was obsessed with each of them. Obsessed, but also worried that the other fourteen tracks wouldn’t be as good. I almost didn’t even want to hear the rest of it cause I knew my expectations were already set too high.

Besides these four singles I also had for some time now the “David’s Town” Comp LP from Record Store Day. This album is mind blowingly bizarre. A concept within a concept if you will. Alright so basically it’s a compilation of different bands from the town in England where the story in “David Comes To Life” takes place. But actually it’s more than that, because none of these bands even exist. The town itself doesn’t even exist. So really it’s members of Fucked Up and their friends creating all these different fictional bands and playing songs that they think they’d play in the fictional town they created on a comp that’s fictional and yet I still own it. Even weirder is that if you didn’t know all that and just listened to it, it actually sounds like a bunch of different bands doing legitimate songs each in their own voices. I’m not sure if this is brilliant or insane or both… but I love it. Me and P listened to it and just straight tripped out at it. If you missed it on RSD, you get a download of it when you preorder the album. I’m not sure if you’ll be able to pay to download it separately at some point too. But check it out. If only for the track My Old Man’s a Ginger.

Also by preordering the album they sent me five other non-album tracks immediately. A couple of them I believe will be on the four 7″s that come out late June. They expand on the narrative and introduce new characters and side-plots. Again this is insane as the album itself is comprised of 18 tracks.

Finally after all this from May 10th to the 13th I was able to download a different side of the double LP each day until I had the whole thing. I almost feel like this whole process of even getting to hear the album in one sitting is one big mind-fuck. I’m actually having a hard time writing this review as a result because my brain is moving in like 200 directions at once trying to properly explain all there is to explain. Maybe it’s best if I just cut to the chase… should you buy this?

Yes. Yes you should. In fact if it’s not too late, do the Buy Early Get Now Preorder and get all the extra shit that goes along with it too.

As I’m writing this paragraph I’m struggling to find my earlier point. Which I believe was this… can an album with this much going on, with this much hype, with this much build up, actually live up to everything that preceded it? And the answer in this case is “fucking hell yeah it can”. Not every single song on this album is gold. I actually think “Chemistry of Common Life” might be a little stronger overall. Particularly “David Comes To Life” starts falling off a little for me on Side D. But it still rules and my opinion of Side D can and probably will change for the better as time goes on. Everything about this still puts most if not all other modern day Hardcore to shame. It puts most if not all concept albums to shame. It puts you reading this right now to shame. And it’s exceedingly weird in the best possible ways. Right now Running on Nothing is my favorite track. Last week it was sShip of Fools. Before that it was The Other Shoe. Just when you think you’re getting a handle on this album you realize you’re still clueless. And in that respect maybe it excels past the rest of their albums.

Check it out. Check it hard. O Canada.

J is my favorite guitarist. I’ve said it a million times on the FSS and I’ll keep sayin it. We went to see him at Mercury Lounge a couple weeks back and at one point P asked me if he was playing a 12 string guitar as J was sitting and P is short. When I told him it was only six he deduced J had extra fingers. Seriously, at one point he was simultaneously playing lead and rhythm on the same guitar. Was insane. So it’s no surprise I dig his new album. Let me for a minute tho say something about the vinyl. For one it’s clear purple with this colored haze and looks rad as fuk. But more importantly it sounds amazing. I spent the first week of owning this album listening to the mp3s on my phone. When I finally sat down with the wax it wasn’t even like I was listening to the same album. Vinyl doesn’t always sound better but when it does Christ it really does.

OFF! – Compared to What 7″
Another band I recently took in. This time at Santos Party House. OFF! Is the band you’ve been needing in your miserable life and just didn’t know it. Two more blasts about ruts and familial dischord in old school 1-2 fuk you fashion. This one is out now on Southern Lord in 2 versions. Retail and tour edition. I got the tour edition when I saw em. Keith even signed it for me at the merch table. Heavy gauge clear blue vinyl. Sounds like a bomb.

OFF! – Live at Generation Records 7″
I feel like I was just talkin bout these guys. Anyway, if you’re not from the NY/NJ area Generation is a killer record shop down by Washington Sq Park that the FSS has been going to for close to 20 years. This 7″ was OFFs entry into this years Record Store Day but they had em at their show too. Four tracks that while awesome don’t do justice to their live show. Ya had ta be there dude.

Fucked Up – The Other Shoe / A Little Death (digital singles)
I played The Other Shoe in my car for P a couple weeks ago and he said Fucked Up are what U2 would have sounded like if they came up in Hardcore and listening to Black Flag. And as much as I fucking despise Bono n crew, he had a point. This song and their recently released second single A Little Death are the densest hardcore I’ve heard maybe ever. There’s just so much going on in these tracks musically it’s hard to put it into words. Head to the matablog and download em for free to see what I mean. I defy you to not jump outta yer skin when Pink Eyes comes in with a “rat-tat-tat”. June can’t come any sooner.

Black Flag – Licorice Pizza 7″ (reissue)
I picked this up a couple weeks back. As the story goes, Henry joins the band and around this time as a gift to fans they put this 7″ out with the first two Henry sung tunes and give em away at a record shop called Licorice Pizza. The shop ends up throwing what they can’t give away in a dumpster and no one really knows how many made their way into captivity. Henry sounds great on Thirsty and Miserable and Life of Pain. Better than “Damaged” in it’s rawness plus they throw in Dez sung Spray Paint for good measure on the reissue. If you ever listened to or read “Get in the Van” you know how nuts it was for ol Hank to have left everything in DC to jump with Flag. You’ll also know just how poor and day to day these guys were living at the time. Just look at em on the cover of this one. So fucking intense. Yeah I dig this one.

Dinosaur Jr 2011 Bug Tour

Aight FSS’ers, if you didn’t know there was a minor theme running in my reviews this week it’s these shows that Dinosaur Jr are doing. When I first heard about this show I actually wondered if maybe it was my idea that someone stole from me in a dream in some sort of twisted sci-fi punk rawk alternate reality. Or maybe my music choices lately somehow bore influence on the cosmos. I dunno. But here we are kids. Dinosaur Jr playing with OFF! and Fucked Up with Henry Rollins doing some oddball band interview at each stop. I can’t not go. And you, yah you, reading this right now… You’re gonna go too and buy me beer and merch. I’m willing that too.

Onkyo Equipment Is Good (or The FSS Save Japan)
When I was growing up in the 80′s I discussed stereo with my Dad and I learned from him a couple things:
1. Any good song sounds 10 times better after 5 beers.
2. Japanese stereo equipment sucks.
Yah, I’m sorry if that sounds bad, but there it is. So for Christmas one year I asked for a tape deck and I received a huge Onkyo TA-2000. “ What the fuck is this Jap nonsense?” I asked. Not out loud though, cuz I wasn’t stupid. But, as I hooked it up and popped in, I don’t remember, maybe whatever the current Ratt album was at the time, it quickly became obvious that Onkyo stuff most definitely did not suck, even in an era when the market was flooded with gaudy, amp overestimating, pieces of shit from both sides of the Pacific. Onkyo made good, affordable stereo then and they still do. Hit them up. Also, give money. Japans a fuckin’ mess. – P-

Thin Lizzy – Every Damn Thing They’ve Done
So last month Gary Moore went to his untimely and ugly, ugly grave. And it was just Saint Paddy’s. So here’s a word or two about Thin Lizzy. They were simply the very best of a very bad genre. They made Kiss look like a Black Metal Menudo. Which, now that I think about it, they might actually have been. They made dueling lead guitars almost okay. Almost. They wrote songs about drinking and fighting and being back in town and jail breakin’ and kickin’ dames. And I’m not a fan of misogyny. It just makes for good Rock and Roll. So hopefully you enjoyed the day and put some Thin Lizzy on the jukebox. Nobody saw that coming, you fucking obvious bastard. -P-

The Hookers – s/t EP
A little while back. I wrote about this band from Kentucky called Hookers. Just Hookers They were a retarded, retarded band. I liked them a lot. But I’m not talkin bout them right now. The Hookers , emphasis on the THE, were basically Murder City Devils minus a couple people. They put out one album a little back on Cold Crush Records. Sounds like it was recorded in a bathroom. It rocks so bad it should be in detention. -P-

Lee Scratch Perry – Every Damn Crazy Thing He Done Did
Wanna hear a story? So Chris Blackwell, the founder of Island Records, he invites Lee Perry over to his palatial Jamaican estate to talk about buying the rights to Scratch’s discography. So Blackwell leaves Scratch alone in the living room for a minute, comes back to see little smiling Lee Perry sitting on the leather couch and a steaming, smiling pile of Lee Perry shit in Blackwell’s cut-crystal bowl on the coffee table. Lee Perry once wrote a letter to the government to get Paul McCartney loose of a drug beef. Lee Perry shacked up with a Swedish royal for a period of time. Lee Perry invented Hip Hop in one afternoon on a Wednesday. Lee Perry is like 5 foot nothing, very trim and yet weighs 6,00 pounds. Lee Perry is not sure what year he was born in, but he was present at your conception. Lee Perry invited Andrew W.K. to co-produce his album. Lee Perry lives in Switzerland and freaks all the Swiss out. Lee Perry built a studio with his own hands. Then he burnt it the fuck down. Cuz Fuck You, that’s why. -P-

Yo La Tengo – Prisoners of Love
I went to a Mexican restaurant a few years back and they were playing Yo La Tengo on their PA. Either the name confused ‘em or Mexicans are big indie rock fans. If like me yer also a confused Mexican, Yo La Tengo are a 3 piece Jewish rock band from Hoboken NJ. Despite their eternal hipster cred they’re easily the best thing about Hoboken next to Maxwells and a certain Op Ivy song. If yer not sure, start with the 2 disc “Prisoners of Love” (some versions even come with a third disc called “A Smattering of Outtakes and Rareities”), but I garuntee you’ll end up buying ‘em all soon there after. -T-

I read recently that Poly Styrene has cancer. A bummer I know. I listened to this the other day in the car and it only made me bummed me out more. Everyone knows or should know punk staple Oh Bondage, Up Yours (shit the afore mentioned Yo La Tengo even covered it) but this album is chock full of hits from Identity to The Day The World Turned Day-Glo to I Live Off You. Get better soon Poly. -T-

With members of Faith No More, Helmet and Jesus Lizard innit this can’t not be good. When you listen to as much music as I do it’s hard to say this person is my favorite guitarist (cough J Mascis) or that person is my favorite bassist (cough Mike Watt) or so forth but I can say with great certainty that Mike cough Patton is my favorite singer. Not all his side projects are winners but when they’re good they’re unbelievable. Check this one or the followup “Mit Gas”. You should probably avoid their American Indian inspired album “Anonymous” like a smallpox covered blanket tho. What? Too soon? -T-

I know P covered this one before but I had it on my phones the other day and felt compelled to echo the sentiment that this may be the best hardcore album ever made. Just brutal shit that will make you lose yours. Also one of the best album names of all time. Also one of the best album intros of all time (Hello, shit? We’re Born Against so suck my fuckin lizard.”).This band got a bad rap for awhile cause they were funded by the buttload of money one of Sam McPheeters’ relatives left him after kicking off. I gotta say tho that there wouldn’t have been a more righteous way to blow the money. Few other bands charge me up like this one. Few other bands hate as much shit as I do. Face the flag son. -T-

Since 1993 this has been and will always be my favorite album of all time. I’m still figuring out how to tattoo the lyrics of My Curse somewhere on my body. The fine folks at High Speed Soul just reissued it on 180 gram vinyl. A product of the 90s I like to think this one stands the test of time. If you disagree I don’t know that we can get down. If you’re not sure buy the vinyl now and see what I’m talkin’ bout. -T-

My lovely wife found out about this show the day of. We’re about 20 minutes from New Brunswick so it was an easy decision to go. Plus Inspector 7 only plays a show once every 5 years or so these days. There was a time tho when you could have seen them weekly round these here parts. They teased a new album in the works this last time. Kids are shaving their heads in anticipation already. -T-

I don’t own anything by this band but I always dug the song Richard Hung Himself and the bands performance of it in the movie “Suburbia”. My friend pointed out to me the other day that the singer was just arrested for doing drugs in front of his kid… cue the I LEARNED IT FROM WATCHING YOU DAD!!!!!! psa. -T-

Yeah I know this movie has more to do with 80s New Wave than Punk… Yeah I know Oingo Boingo is not punk… yeah I know going to College or owning your own Tall and Fat Stores isn’t really punk either… but Rodney Dangerfield is a punk and I’ll go to the mat on that one. He dedicates buildings to himself, calls President Truman a pussy, makes really large meatball sammiches, and tells Kurt Vonnegut to fuck himself. I watch this one every time its on. -T-

Yeah I’m not fucking buying this. How’s that for your exclusive advance review? Fuck you Billie Joe. There’s a reason your initials are b.j., and I wont let you and your shitty band ruin Husker Du for me. Not now. Not ever. So let’s recap… fuck you again Green Day, enjoy your shitty Mellissa Etherage Broadway bullshit and Pepsi sponsored arena tours. I’ll be just fine sitting here now listening to “Candy Apple Grey” and “New Day Rising” back to back. -T-

I just re-bought this on double 12″ vinyl. It’s really hard to say which Jawbreaker LP is my favorite. If you put a gun to my head though I might argue for this one. It’s a little more polished than the others, but lyrically there’s tracks on here that slay me. The 12″ reissue comes with a bunch of bonus tracks they did with J Robbins. A must own. Oh yeah did I mention Christopher Walken is on this one? He is so fuck you. -T-

Faith No More – The Real Thing
“Angel Dust” is their best album. It’s in my top ten at least. So why am I talkin bout this one instead? Cause I listened to it over the weekend and jammed the shit out to it. Billy Gould’s bass sounds so fucking killer on all these tracks. And if I didn’t already mention it (I did) Patton can sing like no other. Yeah Epic may have been an overplayed hit and yeah some of the other tracks surely sound like a product of the time but Surprise! You’re Dead makes me flip hard. Ah-hahahahahahaha IT NEVER ENDS!!!! -T-

The World Inferno Friendship Society – The Anarchy and The Ecstasy
I dig this one. The song Sick of People Being Sick of My Shit speaks to my soul. Look this one isn’t as dense as their last heavy concept work about Fritz Lang or whatever the fuck it was about but sometimes I don’t want to think too hard when listening to music I just wanna enjoy it. And I really enjoy this one. Catchy as fuck. Chunksaah mail-order wax is gorgeous and yes on the download code. -T-

If you read us often you know were big Tim and Eric fans here at FSS HQ. This album may be the oddest thing Tim Heidecker has ever done and that’s saying a lot. This is straight up crazy. Paired with Davin Wood (the dude responsible for Awesome Shows awesome music) the pair do kind of a Seals & Crofts / Hall & Oates type thing. Cept they go so hard and so straight faced if you didn’t know any better you’d think they were serious. They’re not. If you watch even 5 minutes of Tim and Eric you’ll know they’re obsessed with dads so it’s no surprise there’s a song about dads on here. There’s also songs about desert islands, weddings, and cross country skiing. And thankfully the bonus track Christmas Suite will round out uncle T’s 2011 Xmas mix nicely. -T-

Social Distortion – Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes
Oh Mike Ness. Self professed ex-convict. Friend to tattoos. Phenomenal guitarist. Eye liner err…supporter. Antiquing enthusiast . When will you stop writing such dumb lyrics? The gospel singer backups only make this album worse. Mobsters? The dust bowl? The worst album cover art ever? Christ. Me and P’s brother E spent the greater part of a morning commute together LOLing hard at this one and trying to come up with other clichéd sayings and nursery rhymes to sing to the music. Seriously picture Ness earnestly singing “you step on a crack, you’ll break you’re mothers back” and try not to laugh (not an actual lyric but might as well have been). And yet still I plan on seeing Social Distortion the next time they come round. I’m such a sucker for nostalgia sometimes. -T-

Reagan Youth – Live and Rare
Reagan Youth are one of my favorite Hardcore bands of all time and also one of my favorite New York bands of all time. You can download this one on the innertubes gratis if you look hard enough (wink). The live version of New Aryans on it is fucking amazing. Versions of USA, Go Nowhere, Reagan Youth, and that song from Airheads are all also amazing… I watched a documentary about Ronnie Reagan on HBO recently that almost painted him in a good light. This band would probably disagree. -T-
